Job Description

The institution is anchored in the values of public service, social justice, and academic excellence. The Hospital in Itki, Ranchi, Jharkhand, will begin with a 230-bed broad speciality hospital in its first phase and expanding to a 1,300-bed medical college in subsequent phases. The nursing department is central to fulfilling the hospital's mission, and the Head of Nursing will serve as a key leader in building and sustaining this function from the ground up.

The Head of Nursing is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic direction, operational management, and quality assurance of nursing services across all departments of Azim Premji Foundation Hospital and Medical College. This role is critical to the operationalization phase of the hospital — setting up the nursing department from inception, establishing systems, policies, SOPs, and staffing structures that align with national and international quality standards. The incumbent will work closely with clinical, administrative, and paramedical departments to ensure the highest standards of patient care, staff competency, and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

1. Department Setup & Operationalization

· Lead setting up of the nursing department — ability to explore globally and consider the best and most suitable model for our hospital, ward organization, duty structures, workflows, SOPs/policies aligned with NABH/JCI standards.

· Serve as the principal nursing leader and advisor to Hospital leadership on all nursing-related matters.

· Establish nursing stations, equipment and inventory protocols, documentation systems, and credentialing & privileging processes.

· Design and implement the nursing organizational structure, reporting relationships, governance mechanisms, and operating model.

· Lead change management initiatives associated with hospital growth, service expansion, and clinical transformation.

· Help in Defining and establishing nursing protocols and setting up of the nursing function

2. Nursing Administration & Workforce Management

· Develop and implement workforce planning strategies to support phased hospital commissioning and future expansion.

· Determine nursing manpower requirements based on bed strength, specialty mix, patient acuity, occupancy projections, and regulatory requirements

· Recruit, induct and supervise nursing staff across wards, ICUs, OTs, OPDs, emergency and super-specialty areas.

· Manage duty rosters, staffing ratios and deployment; conduct performance appraisals and disciplinary processes.

· Coordinate across clinical, administrative and paramedical departments.

3. Quality, Standards & Compliance

· Ensure NABH/JCI compliance; develop and monitor nursing KPIs (structural, process, outcome indicators incl. fall and infection rates).

· Lead nursing audits, quality improvement initiatives, RCAs, and infection control programs (hand hygiene, biomedical waste, HAI prevention).Monitor and report on Nursing KPIs — Structural Indicators (staff-patient ratios, bed capacity), Process Indicators (medication administration rates, care bundles), and Outcome Indicators (pressure ulcer rates, fall rates, CLABSI, CAUTI, VAP).

· Drive continuous improvement initiatives throughout the nursing function.

4. Training, Education & Competency Development

· Develop a comprehensive nursing education and competency framework.

· Establish orientation, induction, continuing education, and specialty training programs.

· Ensure competency assessment and credentialing of nursing personnel.

· Run induction programs and ensure BLS/ACLS certification for all nursing staff.

· Plan to continue nursing education; coordinate clinical training for nursing students with academic faculty.

5. Patient Care, Patient Experience & Documentation

· Uphold patient-centred care, safety protocols, and grievance handling.

· Maintain nursing records, incident reports and KPI reporting to leadership.

· Champion a patient-centred care culture across all nursing services.

· Monitor patient feedback and implement initiatives to improve patient experience.

6. Multidisciplinary Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement

· Work closely with medical staff, allied health professionals, quality, operations, HR, infection control, and support services teams.

· Promote collaboration among departments to improve patient outcomes and service delivery.

· Support institution-wide strategic initiatives and operational priorities.

7. Leadership, Governance and Performance Management

· Establish nursing governance structures, councils, committees, and leadership forums.

· Conduct regular reviews of nursing service performance and outcomes.

· Provide regular reports on nursing operations, quality indicators, workforce metrics, and strategic initiatives to Hospital leadership.

· Lead nursing preparedness for emergencies, mass casualty incidents, disasters, epidemics, and public health crises.

· Participate in annual budgeting and financial planning for Nursing Services.

· Identify opportunities for operational efficiencies and cost optimization without compromising care quality.

8. Digital Nursing and Clinical Information Systems

· Collaborate with the Information Technology team in the implementation and optimization of digital health systems.

· Lead nursing adoption of electronic medical records and nursing information systems.

· Promote data-driven decision making within Nursing Services.

· Utilize nursing dashboards and analytics to improve performance and care outcomes.

Requirements

· B.Sc./M.Sc. Nursing with PG Diploma in Nursing Administration/Management.

· Valid Jharkhand Nurses Council registration; BLS & ACLS certified (mandatory); Infection Control certification preferred.

· 20+ years in clinical nursing/administration, incl. 10+ years in senior nursing administration (Matron/DNS/NS level) and 5+ years as team leader in a teaching hospital.

· Preference for candidates from public spirited, charitable, mission-driven or government teaching hospitals.

· Strong command of NABH/JCI standards, nursing KPIs, credentialing & privileging, and SOP development.

· Proven ability to build and lead large nursing teams from the ground up; sound knowledge of labour laws and workforce planning.
