The Hospital and Medical College in Itki, Ranchi, Jharkhand will begin with a 230-bed broad speciality hospital in its first phase and expand to a 1,300-bed medical college in subsequent phases.


The Head of Bio-Medical Engineering will be responsible for building the Bio-Medical Engineering (BME) department from the ground up for a greenfield hospital that will grow into a large medical college. This is a foundational leadership role covering recruitment, equipment procurement, and the design and implementation of systems and processes aligned with applicable quality and regulatory standards. The incumbent will be the institution's primary technical authority on all biomedical equipment across clinical and diagnostic areas and will remain accountable for the department as the hospital scales from 230 to 1,300 beds.

Responsibilities

• Establish the Bio-Medical Engineering department for the hospital from inception, including team structure, workflows, SOPs and governance.

• Serve as the institution's primary technical authority on all biomedical devices, medical technology infrastructure, and equipment lifecycle management.

• Lead end-to-end recruitment for the BME department, building a skilled team of engineers and technicians across all specialities and shifts.

• Collaborate with architects, project management consultants, facility planners, clinicians, and administrators during design and construction stages.

• Drive procurement of biomedical equipment: technical specification writing, vendor evaluation, price benchmarking, negotiation support and final selection in coordination with clinical and administrative leadership.

• Assess and advise hospital leadership on the most financially and technically viable equipment options in line with clinical requirements and budget.

• Design and implement a comprehensive Preventive Maintenance Schedule (PMS) covering all biomedical equipment across the hospital.

• Manage relationships with large medical equipment OEMs and oversee AMC/CMC contracts, in-warranty support and internal maintenance capabilities.

• Ensure regulatory and statutory compliance for all biomedical equipment, including AERB, PCPNDT, BARC, Clinical Establishment Act requirements and other applicable regulations.

• Lead implementation of NABH quality standards as applicable to biomedical equipment management and preventive maintenance systems.

• Set up and manage a BME store, including inventory tracking, spares management, and asset registers.

• Forecast and prepare capital and operational budgets for biomedical equipment, covering both current operations and phase-wise hospital expansion.

• Manage the complete equipment lifecycle — planning, commissioning, installation, operation, maintenance, upgrades, condemnation and disposal.

• Coordinate with mechanical, civil, and electrical teams to ensure infrastructure readiness and integration wherever biomedical equipment is involved.

• Provide technical oversight for specialised systems including MGPS, Radiology and imaging equipment, all types of Operation Theatres and ICUs, Emergency, Wards and CSSD.

• Collaborate with Information Technology teams to support integration of medical devices with clinical information systems.

• Develop equipment user-training programs for clinicians, nurses, technicians, and support staff.

• Participate in hospital committees related to quality, safety, procurement, technology, infrastructure, and operational readiness.

• Provide regular reports on equipment performance, capital investments, maintenance metrics, risks, and strategic initiatives.Build systems and documentation that will scale smoothly as the institution grows from a 230-bed hospital into a 1,300-bed medical college.

Requirements

• B.Tech in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical & Electronics Engineering

• 18+ years of overall experience in the Bio-Medical Engineering department of a hospital with 250+ beds.

• Of the above, at least 8–10 years in a leadership / Head of Department (HOD) role.

• Demonstrated experience setting up the entire Bio-Medical Engineering function of a hospital from the ground up.

• Strong working knowledge of modern biomedical equipment across MGPS, Radiology, all types of OT and ICU, Emergency, Wards, CSSD and other clinical areas.

• Proven experience creating and implementing a comprehensive Preventive Maintenance System (PMS) for hospital-wide equipment.

• Experience managing large medical OEMs and administering AMC, CMC and internal maintenance operations.

• Experience leading and managing large, multi-disciplinary teams.

• In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience of regulatory compliance — AERB, PCPNDT, BARC, Clinical Establishment and related requirements.

• Experience with NABH accreditation and implementation of NABH quality standards for equipment PMS.

• Experience setting up a BME store and asset tracking/management systems.

• Experience in budgeting and forecasting for both existing operations and hospital expansion plans.

• Experience managing the full equipment lifecycle, from commissioning through to condemnation and disposal.

• Basic working knowledge of mechanical, civil, and electrical systems as they relate to biomedical equipment.
